Self Discipline

The path to success is never straight, there are several twists & turns, set backs, and obstacles. Motivation can only get you so far, but self discipline can take you anywhere.  Self discipline is not wanting or feeling like taking action but doing it anyways. Motivation can be found through speeches, videos, well versed songs, poems or any form of media for that matter.  Self discipline is something that is learned over a long period of time.  Your brain creates neurological pathways when you choose to do something.  Those pathways must be strengthened in order to become a habit.  Unfortunately bad habits are formed the same way....by strengthening the pathway through choosing a lack of action.

What we are trying to do is wipe out the bad habits by rewiring our brains , it takes massive action and self discipline so here are some tips I have found to help me and some of you as well.

1. Write down how you feel before your action.  For example, if you are supposed to go to the gym but find yourself not feeling like it, write down how you are feeling and why.  Then do it anyways and write down how you feel after.   Doing this for sometime you will develop the habit that will be embedded in your brain.

2.  Make a plan. Try to make a plan with a buddy, something weekly that you don't have to feel committed to because life happens sometimes.  Make sure your accountability partner is someone that is at a different level than you are.  For example, using the same content from the last example, link up with someone that has already been going to the gym steadily for awhile.  They will be more likely to cheer you on and urge you to come rather than give in with you.

3.  Do not expect everything to come easily.   Things that come easily are usually not worth it.  The same goes for taking the easy way out, you don't always come out winning.

Ok guys as always feel free to leave questions, comments, or suggestions and I will get back to you...good luck!!

  1. Girl, I LOVED this post!! I couldn't agree with you more on planning. Even if I don't have someone who's available to plan with me, even writing it down and making it real is super important. This was a great post- thanks!!

  3. I love this Joanna !!! Number one really stood out to me because I can't see how helpful it is to write your feelings down whether you want to do it or not and then still forcing yourself to do it! Thank you for sharing I enjoyed reading it!

    1. I thought about how it feels after accomplishing your goals you can look back in those journals and see or re-experience it. A nice reminder of how you pushed through the pain and persevered. Thanks Sandra, I'm so glad you liked it.

  4. Such great points! I loved the 1st point. I've never thought of doing something like that but I can see how writing down and being acutely aware of why would be beneficial. Thanks girl!
